How to Discern the Signs of Traumatic Brain Injury

When we think about the term traumatic brain injury, it sounds like the kind of injury that would make itself quite evident. In extreme cases, that is exactly how it happens, but not always. It is both a scary and a startling fact to acknowledge, but even brain injuries can go unnoticed for a long time.

In fact, that is exactly what happens in most cases where the signs of concussion are not immediately obvious. If you or someone close to you has been in an accident/altercation lately, then it is strongly advised that you look for the more subtle signs associated with brain trauma.

Headaches and Nausea

Headaches, vomiting, and a constant feeling of nausea are some of the most common warning signs of a concussion. Contact a physician or go to the emergency room immediately if you experience these symptoms soon after being involved in an accident or physical altercation. If your physician confirms a concussion, then you should immediately consider why you received the injury.

In case there is any reason to believe that the concussion is caused on account of someone else’s actions or lack thereof, consult with a traumatic brain injury lawyer to know your legal options. If you have a case, you should not have to pay for your treatment. If the trauma is serious enough, you might be eligible for a lot more than just the cost of treatment.

Loss of Consciousness

Loss of consciousness after a concussion may feel like you are losing track of time if it happens while you are lying down. If you live alone, it may leave you feeling groggy and confused. Unfortunately, most people who lose consciousness after a traumatic head injury do so while they are engaged in an activity such as walking, exercising, working, riding, or driving. As we can imagine, the effects of falling unconscious behind the wheel or even in the middle of a walk can be deadly.

Balance Loss

Football players, boxers, and other athletes have better balance than the average individual. Therefore, loss of balance and dizziness are telltale signs of trauma to the brain that all athletes should always looks out for, especially after a game/match where they got hit on the head. The sensation may often be followed up by a loss of consciousness, but it may not always happen.

Concussions can be minor and with proper treatment, it should not persist at all. Unfortunately, concussions can also be major, which may lead to permanent brain damage if they are not detected and treated as soon as possible. If there is significant swelling in the brain, an untreated traumatic head injury can even be lethal.

You might be surprised to know that patients may not even realize that they received a blow on their head during the incident. In any situation, it is always advisable to see the doctor and get yourself properly checked after a traumatic event of any nature.
