Stay on Track While on Vacation
If you are in a good routine of taking care of your health, good for you. It is not easy to prioritize your health when there is fast food on every corner and most restaurants deliver to your door. It can also be hard when you are celebrating special events and traveling. Here are tips on staying healthy while on vacation.
Give Yourself Options
When you travel and you want to make sure your health stays a priority, it is important that you research what food options are available before you leave. If you will be with your family and friends, you should take into consideration that not everyone has the same goals as you.
When you choose a vacation like an all inclusive cruise, there will be many different food options available. The good news about that is that there will be fruits and oatmeal at breakfast and salad bar options for lunch and dinner. You can splurge when you feel like it but you will not be forced to eat high-fat meals every day.
Eat Breakfast
When you travel you may be walking long distances and exploring your surroundings. In order to not be tempted to eat every little thing you see along the way, you must eat breakfast. Your metabolism does not start pumping until you feed your body. You should choose options that provide protein, fiber, and energy.
Great breakfast examples include:
- Eggs
- Quinoa
- Greek yogurt
- Turkey bacon
- Bananas
- Oatmeal
- Whole wheat toast
- Smoothies
- Protein shakes
- Berries
Stay Hydrated
It can be hard to stay hydrated when you travel because the water will most likely need to be carried around everywhere you go. But you will notice that when you get enough water to drink, you do not have as many cravings.
When you are drinking enough water, you have more energy and your body performs better. You should not drink sugary drinks every day or your body will feel sluggish. If you are visiting somewhere that the tap water is not trusted, you will need to purchase plenty of bottled water or get yourself a self-filtering bottle.
Buy Groceries
When you plan your meals ahead of time, it is easier to make wise choices. When you choose your hotel or lodge, find one with a refrigerator, microwave, and even a cooktop. This will make it easier to store and prepare your healthy meals.
You can look for a nearby grocery store on the way from the airport or ask the concierge. You could buy yogurt and fruit for breakfasts, salad mixes for lunch, and chicken breasts and vegetables for dinners. Do not forget healthy snacks to keep handy like protein bars and carrot sticks.
Choose to Walk
If you are sightseeing, walk as much of the trip as you can. If things are a couple of blocks away, you can always walk instead of taking a taxi. Even when the destination is five blocks away, choose to walk. Some hotels provide bicycles for their guests, you could bike to the grocery store or the beach for exercise.
Take advantage of the hotel gym and use the treadmill or elliptical upon waking to get ready for your day. Or you may choose to go for an evening walk around the neighborhood or beach before bed. Wear a step tracker to make sure that you are achieving your goal of getting at least 10.000 steps a day.
Drink More Tea
There are many benefits to drinking different types of tea. It provides many antioxidants to keep your immune system strong, which is important while you are traveling. Drinking tea in the morning is a better way to get your caffeine than sugary coffees.
There are even night-time teas that you can drink to help you wind down after dinner. Tea can help you keep extra weight off and kick start your digestive tract. Tea can also help your mental health and regulate your blood sugar.
