Often we don’t have time to start a course when a member asks me: “But watching a film in the original language can be useful to me?”

Yes, well, the idea is certainly not bad but if you are little more than a beginner it might just knock you down and make you believe that you are unprepared, denied for languages.

Passive learning is the basis for building an active approach to the language, so cheer up the original language TV series and movies, the subtitles, the remote button that changes your language, and let’s put in the apps to practice grammar.

The technology is there and must be used but everything must be planned with a minimum of sense.

Watching a film in the original language: some advice

If we wanted to watch a program in the original language, I would like to give you some useful advice.

1) Evaluate , perhaps with your teacher, if you have a level such as to be able to start viewing original language material independently.

2) Choose carefully the series or movie to see. Especially for the first approach, it has to be something simple. If you’ve never heard of an American accent, go for films with British actors. Avoid content with too specific jargon, do not immediately venture to Grey’s Anatomy, where one of the most heartfelt words is “exploratory laparotomy”, so to speak.

3) Start with episodes or movies that you already know , so that you already have an idea of what you are going to deal with and can link what you hear to what you already know. It will make you better familiar with this activity.

4) Start with small 5-10 minute sessions. Online videos on Ted TV can be a good place to start. Watching Titanic, in addition to making you shed tears, could literally make your brain melt – it takes a lot of focus and training.

5) Do not think that seeing material in the language leads you to be excellent conversationalists in a short time : the step from passive knowledge to active knowledge of a language is long and above all not automatic: it must be practiced well.

To improve your knowledge of foreign languages you can always choose to attend one of our foreign language courses.
